What is Mino-yaki (Mino-ware)

Mino ware takes its name from the historical region of Mino, which includes present-day areas like Toki City, Tajimi City, Kasahara Town, and Mizunami City in Gifu Prefecture. With a history spanning over 1,300 years, Mino ware is a traditional Japanese pottery known for its unique qualities, including the distinctive texture of its clay and glazes. Its delicate craftsmanship and beauty are key attractions, along with its remarkable versatility.

Today, Mino ware is used to create a wide range of items, from tableware and tea sets to vases, all designed to suit various purposes. It continues to be beloved for its connection to Japanese culinary culture and is highly regarded both in Japan and internationally for its artistry and craftsmanship.

The Supreme Craftsmanship of the Tōno Region that Graced the Emperor's Enthronement Ceremony

Proudly serving as a supplier to the Imperial Household Agency in Tokyo, this craftsmanship has been entrusted with creating the ceremonial ware used for the Emperor’s Enthronement and the Daijōsai (Great Thanksgiving) rites.

The exceptional pottery skills of local artisans in Tajimi have earned widespread acclaim. In 1952, handmade teacups from the city's pottery factories were also delivered to the Imperial Household for the Emperor’s Coming-of-Age Ceremony.

This underscores the deep respect and recognition of the pottery techniques from the Tōno region.
